5 simple Mandarin greetings for kids
- 新年快乐 xīnnián kuàilè – Happy New Year
- 春节快乐 Chūnjié kuàilè – Happy Spring Festival
- 恭喜发财 gōngxǐ fācái – Wishing you wealth and prosperity
- 身体健康 shēntǐ jiànkāng – Wishing you good health
- 羊年快乐 yáng nián kuàilè – Happy Year of the Goat
Easy activities (ages 4–9)
- Color the zodiac animal. Talk about the 12 animals and find out which one each child was born in.
- Make red envelopes (红包 hóngbāo). Red stands for luck and happiness. Kids can fold an envelope and put a kind wish inside instead of money.
- Hang a 福 sign. 福 fú means good fortune. Many families hang it upside down, because "upside down" (倒 dào) sounds like "arrives" (到 dào), so it reads as "good fortune has arrived".
- Paper lanterns for the Lantern Festival. A strip of red paper, some cuts and glue make a simple lantern.
- Learn 5 festival words: 红包 hóngbāo (red envelope), 灯笼 dēnglong (lantern), 饺子 jiǎozi (dumplings), 鞭炮 biānpào (firecrackers), 春联 chūnlián (spring couplets).
